OpenAI, Oracle, and SoftBank have announced a significant expansion of their Stargate AI infrastructure project, revealing plans for five new U.S. data centers. This massive undertaking will boost Stargate’s planned capacity to nearly 7 gigawatts and represents an investment exceeding $400 billion over the next three years.

The Stargate project, launched earlier this year under President Donald Trump, aims to position the U.S. as a global leader in artificial intelligence by establishing a nationwide infrastructure for advanced AI research and development. This latest expansion builds on a previous agreement in July where OpenAI and Oracle committed to adding up to 4.5 gigawatts of Stargate capacity.

The newly announced sites include locations in Shackelford County, Texas; Doña Ana County, New Mexico; and a yet-to-be-named Midwest location. Additionally, two more data center sites are slated for Lordstown, Ohio, and Milam County, Texas. These locations were selected following an extensive nationwide search that commenced in January, which saw the partners evaluate over 300 proposals from more than 30 states.

These projects are projected to create over 25,000 onsite jobs and tens of thousands of related positions across the country. This rapid progress indicates the companies are on track to surpass their initial $500 billion pledge for U.S. AI infrastructure, originally announced in January 2025, as they continue to review other potential locations for further expansion.
