Almost a century after the notorious ‘Torso Killer’ terrorized Cleveland, Ohio, authorities are leveraging advanced DNA testing to identify victims of the unsolved serial murder spree. The DNA Doe Project, a non-profit organization, is actively collaborating with the Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner’s Office in a renewed effort to name some of the 10 unidentified victims from the 1930s.

Known also as the ‘Mad Butcher of Kingsbury Run,’ the killer murdered and dismembered at least 12 individuals between 1935 and 1938. Despite extensive investigations at the time, only two victims were ever identified, with many bodies found decapitated and heads never recovered, complicating identification efforts for decades.

As part of the current investigation, two bodies believed to be victims of the ‘Torso Killer’ have been exhumed. One is the ‘Tattooed Man,’ arguably the killer’s most famous victim, found decapitated in 1936 with distinctive tattoos including the names ‘Helen’ and ‘Paul.’ The second exhumed body is believed to be the killer’s sixth victim, discovered on Cleveland’s lakefront in 1938.

Both sets of remains are currently undergoing testing. While the age of the remains presents challenges such as contamination or degradation, the DNA Doe Project has a track record of successful identifications from older cases. The ultimate goal is to develop comprehensive DNA profiles, build family trees, and connect with living relatives, offering long-awaited dignity and justice to those who remained anonymous for so long.
