Gaza City’s already fragile healthcare system faced a severe blow on Tuesday after an Israeli strike reportedly reduced the main center of the Palestinian Medical Relief Society (PMRS) to rubble. The six-story facility in the central Samer area was a critical hub, providing essential services including blood donation, trauma care, and cancer treatment. The Israeli military has not yet commented on the strike, which comes amidst a broader conflict where numerous medical facilities in Gaza have been targeted or forced to close.

In a separate escalation, Israel announced the complete closure of the Allenby Bridge Crossing between the occupied West Bank and Jordan until further notice. This critical route, vital for Palestinian cargo, passengers, and humanitarian aid to Gaza, was shut following an attack last week that killed two Israelis. Concurrently, the Palestinian Ministry of Health reported the death of 20-year-old Saeed Murad Naasan in the West Bank village of al-Mughayyir, allegedly shot by Israeli settlers during a confrontation, an incident the Israeli military states is under review.

The destruction of the PMRS center drew swift condemnation, with the head of the World Health Organization, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, calling for an end to “senseless violence” and a ceasefire. This incident adds to growing international pressure on Israel, with 24 Western nations, including Canada, France, and Germany, recently urging the restoration of medical corridors for Palestinians and the lifting of restrictions on aid. The ongoing Israeli offensive in Gaza City, which Israel states aims to pressure Hamas and recover hostages, has exacerbated a severe humanitarian crisis, with hundreds of thousands displaced and parts of the city facing famine conditions.
