President Trump Confirms Murdoch Involvement in Imminent TikTok US Sale

President Donald Trump has indicated that media moguls Rupert and Lachlan Murdoch are likely to play a role in the impending acquisition of TikTok’s US operations. Speaking in a recent interview, Trump confirmed ongoing discussions for the Chinese-owned social media platform, emphasizing the involvement of prominent American figures.
The President’s comments come as the long-anticipated deal for TikTok, currently owned by China’s ByteDance, appears to be nearing completion. Congress passed legislation in 2024 mandating the sale of TikTok to a US entity due to national security and privacy concerns, a deadline which the Trump administration has extended multiple times.
While initially mentioning Larry Ellison and Michael Dell, Trump added, “I hate to tell you this – a man named Lachlan is involved… Rupert is probably gonna be in the group, I think they’re gonna be in the group, a couple of others. Really great people. Very prominent people. And they’re also American patriots, they love this country, so I think they’re gonna do a really good job.” Reports suggest Fox Corporation, rather than the Murdochs individually, would be part of the investor group.
White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt further detailed the proposed structure, stating that six Americans will comprise the company’s seven-seat board, with Oracle, Ellison’s company, set to control data and privacy. Leavitt affirmed that the US would also oversee the app’s data and algorithm within America, declaring, “This deal does put America first… This deal means that TikTok will be majority-owned by Americans in the United States.” Trump also recently credited TikTok with aiding his 2024 presidential re-election victory.
