The Hague was plunged into chaos yesterday, September 20, 2025, as a right-wing anti-immigration demonstration escalated into violent clashes with police and vandalism, just weeks before the Netherlands’ general election on October 29.

Rioters, some reportedly carrying symbols of the pre-war Dutch Nazi party, confronted authorities, leading police to deploy tear gas and a water cannon to disperse the crowds. A police vehicle was torched, and an office of the centrist D66 political party was attacked. Dutch news agency ANP reported approximately 1,500 anti-immigration protesters also blocked the A12 highway connecting The Hague to the German border.

Caretaker Prime Minister Dick Schoof condemned the “shocking and bizarre images of shameless violence,” calling the attacks “completely unacceptable.” D66 leader Rob Jetten vowed his party would not be intimidated by extremist rioters. Even anti-Islam lawmaker Geert Wilders, whose party’s withdrawal from the ruling coalition triggered the upcoming election over migration disputes, denounced the rioters as “idiots” and “scum” for their actions.
