President Donald Trump is expected to fire U.S. Attorney Erik Siebert for the Eastern District of Virginia today, sources familiar with the matter confirm. The dismissal comes after Siebert’s office reportedly found no clear evidence of mortgage fraud against New York Attorney General Letitia James, despite pressure from Trump administration officials to bring criminal charges.

ABC News first reported earlier this week that federal prosecutors in Virginia had been unable to substantiate claims that James knowingly committed mortgage fraud during a 2023 home purchase. Despite this, officials allegedly pushed Siebert to pursue the charges, leading to the decision to remove him from his post. Siebert’s last day is anticipated to be Friday, September 19, 2025.

The move is poised to trigger a crisis within one of the nation’s most prominent U.S. attorney’s offices, known for handling significant espionage and terrorism cases. Critics are raising concerns about the Trump administration’s alleged use of the Department of Justice to target political adversaries, citing ongoing investigations into figures like Sen. Adam Schiff and Federal Reserve Governor Lisa Cook.

Sources indicate the administration plans to install a new U.S. attorney who would more aggressively investigate James. James has been a vocal critic of Trump, successfully pursuing a civil fraud case against him last year and leading multiple lawsuits challenging his administration’s policies. Trump has repeatedly accused her of political bias.

Siebert, who was nominated by Trump in May, had served as interim U.S. attorney since January. His tenure was extended by the District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia after his initial 120-day term expired.
