Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg today revealed a new generation of AI-powered smart glasses during the company’s annual “Meta Connect” developers conference. This announcement underscores Meta’s intensified strategy to integrate artificial intelligence into wearable technology, positioning smart glasses as a foundational platform for future user experiences.
The latest collection includes devices developed in collaboration with renowned eyewear brands Ray-Ban and Oakley. A standout introduction is the Meta Ray-Ban Display, which features a full-colour, high-resolution screen embedded in one lens, facilitating video calls and message display. This model also incorporates a 12-megapixel camera and is set to launch this month with a price tag of $799 (£586).
Zuckerberg also demonstrated a novel “neural wristband” designed to seamlessly pair with the Meta Ray-Ban Display glasses, enabling users to execute tasks like sending messages through subtle hand gestures. Additionally, the event saw the introduction of new Oakley Meta Vanguard glasses, priced at $499 and targeting sports enthusiasts, alongside the second iteration of the standard Ray-Ban Meta glasses, available for $379.
Despite a minor technical hitch during a live WhatsApp call demonstration, Zuckerberg hailed the technology as a “huge scientific breakthrough” and a critical step in embedding Meta AI into daily life. Analysts suggest that smart glasses are poised for greater success than Meta’s ambitious Metaverse project, primarily due to their practical and less cumbersome form factor for everyday use.
