Three police officers were killed and two critically injured yesterday in a devastating shooting in rural York County, Pennsylvania. Authorities have confirmed the gunman was also killed in the incident, which has prompted a major state and federal investigation.

The slain and injured officers were reportedly following up on a domestic-related investigation when the deadly events unfolded. Pennsylvania State Police Commissioner Christopher Paris confirmed the shooter’s death on Wednesday, stating that the scene remained active and that all resources of the Pennsylvania State Police were being deployed.

Governor Josh Shapiro rushed to North Codorus Township, approximately 185 kilometers (115 miles) west of Philadelphia, to meet with the families of the victims. He described the day as “absolutely tragic and devastating for York County and the entire commonwealth of Pennsylvania.” Commissioner Paris indicated that a “major case team” would be convened in partnership with the York County District Attorney’s Office, with the FBI also involved.

Pennsylvania Attorney General Dave Sunday, who has deep ties to York County, called the loss “unfathomable,” while U.S. Attorney General Pamela Bondi expressed federal support, condemning the violence against police as “a scourge on our society.” A local school district had issued a shelter-in-place order during the incident, which was later lifted.
