Gaza City’s medical infrastructure is teetering on the brink of collapse as Israeli forces launch a full-scale ground incursion into the region’s largest urban center. Health officials and aid workers report that northern Gaza’s medical services are already critically overstretched, with an urgent plea issued by the Health Ministry for essential medical supplies to combat ‘catastrophic’ stock depletion levels.

The humanitarian crisis is dire, particularly for vulnerable patients. The director of Al-Shifa Hospital in Gaza City warned that the lives of countless civilians, including premature infants, are in grave danger without immediate protection for hospitals and staff. Dr. Muhammad Abu Salmiya highlighted the desperate situation with a poignant image of six premature babies sharing a single incubator, emphasizing that ‘these infants cannot be accommodated anywhere within the Gaza Strip. There is a real danger to their lives.’

Aid organizations are struggling to maintain operations amidst the escalating conflict. Medical Aid for Palestinians (MAP) affirmed its commitment to staying in Gaza City as long as possible, despite facing ‘an increasingly difficult and dangerous situation’ from ongoing military attacks and threats of forced displacement. MAP’s Gaza director, Fikr Shalltoot, noted severe movement restrictions are limiting field visits.

Adding to the crisis, the Abdel Shafi Community Health Association (ACHA), a key medical partner, was forced to suspend operations at its Gaza City headquarters. Following a 48-hour evacuation deadline from Israeli forces this past Saturday, ACHA is now cut off from critical medical equipment, including laboratory tools and one of only two CT scanners vital for the city’s diagnostics.
