Christian Brueckner, the primary suspect in the 2007 disappearance of British girl Madeleine McCann, is slated for release from a German prison this month. This development comes as British police confirm Brueckner has declined their request for an interview regarding the cold case.

DCI Mark Cranwell, Senior Investigating Officer from Britain’s Metropolitan Police, affirmed that the 49-year-old German national remains a suspect in their ongoing investigation. Brueckner, who was living in Portugal’s Algarve region when McCann vanished, was first publicly identified as a suspect by British and German police in 2020.

Madeleine McCann was three years old when she disappeared from her family’s holiday apartment in Praia da Luz, Algarve, on May 3, 2007, triggering a global search and media frenzy. She has never been found. German police stated in June 2020 that they assume McCann is dead and that Brueckner is likely responsible, a claim he has consistently denied.

Brueckner is currently serving a sentence for the rape of a 72-year-old woman in the same Algarve area. British authorities have stated they will continue to pursue all viable lines of inquiry in the McCann case, despite Brueckner’s refusal to cooperate. Any questions regarding the conditions of his impending release have been directed to German authorities.

In anticipation of his release, Portuguese and German police conducted a four-day search for evidence related to McCann’s disappearance in the Algarve this past June.
