Brian Kilmeade Issues Apology After Advocating for Execution of Mentally Ill Homeless

Fox News Channel host Brian Kilmeade offered a public apology on Sunday for remarks made last week advocating for the execution of mentally ill homeless individuals. Kilmeade, who co-hosts ‘Fox & Friends,’ described his comment as ‘extremely callous’ during an appearance on the network’s weekend show, just one day before the current analysis date.
The controversial statement originated during a Wednesday broadcast of ‘Fox & Friends,’ where Kilmeade was discussing the August 22 stabbing murder of Iryna Zarutska on a Charlotte, North Carolina light rail train. Decarlos Brown Jr., identified as a homeless and mentally ill man, was arrested in connection with the murder. The discussion veered into public spending on homelessness, with Kilmeade interjecting, ‘Or involuntary lethal injection, or something. Just kill ’em,’ in response to a co-host’s suggestion about jailing those who refuse services.
Kilmeade’s initial comment gained significant online traction over the past weekend, drawing widespread criticism. In his apology, he stated, ‘I wrongly said they should get lethal injection. I apologize for that extremely callous remark. I am obviously aware that not all mentally ill, homeless people act as the perpetrator did in North Carolina and that so many homeless people deserve our empathy and compassion.’
The incident has drawn sharp condemnation from advocates. Christine Quinn, president and CEO of Win, a New York City provider of shelter and services for homeless children, called Kilmeade’s initial remark ‘completely devoid of all humanity’ and extended an invitation for him to volunteer at one of their shelters.
The Justice Department recently announced charges against Brown for committing an act causing death on a mass transportation system. Brown’s family has indicated he was diagnosed with schizophrenia and has a history of criminal offenses.
