Poland and approximately 40 of its international allies have issued a strong condemnation following a recent intrusion of Russian drones into Polish airspace, labeling it a ‘flagrant violation’ of international law. The incident prompted an emergency meeting of the UN Security Council, where Warsaw, backed by nations including the European Union members, Ukraine, the United States, Japan, and Canada, urged Moscow to cease further provocations and uphold its obligations under the UN Charter.

In a rapid response to the escalating tensions, NATO leaders announced enhanced defense measures for Poland. France, Germany, and Denmark are set to contribute fighter jets and other critical military assets to an expanded ‘Eastern Sentry’ mission. This initiative, which the UK is also expected to join, aims to bolster defenses across the region, from the Arctic to the Black Sea, specifically countering Russian drone and missile threats.

These diplomatic and military developments coincide with the commencement of major joint military drills by Russia and its key ally, Belarus, which began yesterday. The exercises are being conducted near the borders of Poland and Lithuania, as well as in the Baltic and Barents seas. In a direct counter-measure, Poland has deployed approximately 40,000 troops to its border with Belarus for the duration of these drills.

On the diplomatic front, Russia has indicated that peace talks with Ukraine are currently on ‘pause.’ Meanwhile, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, speaking from Kyiv, reiterated his warning that Vladimir Putin’s ultimate objective remains the occupation of all of Ukraine. Zelenskyy urged Western allies to distrust Putin’s rhetoric and to encourage China to leverage its influence to halt Moscow’s offensive.

Separately, Prince Harry made a surprise visit to Kyiv, where he laid a wreath at a memorial for Ukraine’s war dead in Maidan Square. During his trip, he expressed a commitment to providing ‘everything possible’ to support injured military personnel, with his Invictus Games Foundation outlining new initiatives for rehabilitation across the country.
