Man Killed, ICE Agent Injured in Violent Chicago Immigration Arrest; Investigation Launched

A man was fatally shot by a federal officer and an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent was severely injured during a violent immigration arrest in the Chicago area yesterday, Friday. The incident, which occurred in Franklin Park, has sparked an FBI investigation and drawn swift reactions from state officials and community advocates.

According to ICE, officers were conducting a targeted vehicle stop yesterday morning when the individual resisted arrest. ICE stated the person attempted to drive his vehicle into the arresting officers, striking and dragging one of them. Fearing for his life, an officer discharged his firearm, striking the subject.

Both the officer and the driver were transported to a hospital. The driver, identified by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) as Silverio Villegas-Gonzalez, was pronounced dead. The injured ICE officer sustained severe injuries but is reported to be in stable condition. Democratic State Representative Norma Hernandez stated, “We are devastated by this news, because we have seen ICE has ramped up its racial profiling and unconstitutional policing in Illinois, and these tactics have led to a loss of life.” She linked the death to “Trump and ICE” policies. The shooting occurred in the same week ICE launched “Operation Midway Blitz,” an immigration enforcement campaign across Illinois, although it was not immediately clear if this specific incident was part of that campaign.
