Federal charges have been filed against Decarlos Brown Jr., 34, in connection with the fatal stabbing of Iryna Zarutska on a Charlotte light rail, prompting former President Donald Trump to publicly demand the death penalty for the suspect. Brown, arrested on August 22, faces charges of committing an act causing death on a mass transportation system, which could make him eligible for capital punishment, the Department of Justice announced.

Trump took to social media on Wednesday, stating, “The ANIMAL who so violently killed the beautiful young lady from Ukraine… should be given a ‘Quick’ (there is no doubt!) Trial, and only awarded THE DEATH PENALTY. There can be no other option!!!” His comments came as U.S. Attorney Russ Ferguson described the unprovoked attack on 23-year-old Zarutska as a “terroristic act,” vowing to bring justice to her grieving family.

The incident, which saw Zarutska, a Ukrainian refugee, stabbed while riding the Lynx Blue Line, has ignited widespread outrage. Charlotte Mayor Vi Lyles announced increased security on commuter trains effective immediately, while U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy criticized the city’s “failure to protect Iryna Zarutska.” North Carolina Republicans held a press conference Wednesday, calling the attack “100% preventable” and a “wake-up call” for Charlotte.

Brown, who has a history of criminal offenses, is scheduled for his next court appearance on September 19. A candlelight vigil in Zarutska’s honor is planned for September 22, as her family, heartbroken by the loss, demands a full investigation into the circumstances of her death and calls for systemic public safety improvements.
