Chicago’s downtown core has been engulfed by large-scale protests tonight, as demonstrators take to the streets to condemn ramped-up U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) operations ahead of Mexican Independence Day. The protests, which saw crowds marching through the Loop, Michigan Avenue, and State Street, are a direct response to what activists describe as increased immigration enforcement and alleged violations of due process.

Chanting slogans and carrying signs, protesters voiced deep frustrations and fears over the current climate. One U.S. Army veteran, an immigrant himself, expressed profound sadness and fear for his family, recalling his military oath in defiance of potential National Guard deployment. Another protester highlighted concerns over due process, criticizing reported arrests and deportations.

The march, which drew the attention of tourists and locals alike, saw many demonstrators raising their middle fingers and chanting “shame” as they passed the Trump International Hotel & Tower, signaling strong opposition to President Trump’s immigration and LGBTQ+ policies, particularly in what participants referred to as his second term.
