New whispers from the tech world suggest Sony is planning a significant strategic shift for its next-generation console, the PlayStation 6. According to a recent report from YouTube channel Moore’s Law is Dead, the upcoming console, potentially arriving within the next few years, could include a dockable handheld variant, directly challenging Nintendo’s market dominance with the Switch and its rumored successor, the Switch 2.

Codenamed ‘Canis’, this innovative handheld is reportedly one of three SKUs in development for the PS6. The primary flagship model, ‘Orion’, is expected to deliver the high-end specifications synonymous with PlayStation consoles. However, the ‘Canis’ variant, alongside a ‘Canis’ console (or ‘PS6 S’), would offer a more flexible gaming experience, allowing players to seamlessly transition between portable and docked modes, much like Nintendo’s popular hybrid console.

Sources indicate that the ‘Canis’ models might share similar specifications, potentially leaning closer to the current power of the PS5 or PS5 Pro, but with targeted upgrades. This move suggests Sony may be diversifying its strategy, not solely focusing on raw power – an area where diminishing returns are increasingly evident – but also aiming to capture a broader share of the console and handheld gaming markets. While these are early rumors and should be treated with caution until official announcements from Sony, the prospect of a native, dockable PlayStation handheld is already generating considerable buzz among the gaming community.
