A painting by Giuseppe Ghislandi, originally looted by the Nazis, has reportedly vanished again following a police raid on a property near Buenos Aires this week. Argentine authorities are now investigating an alleged cover-up of smuggling after the artwork, ‘Portrait of a Lady,’ was conspicuously absent from the home where it had been recently spotted in an estate agent’s advertisement.

Federal prosecutor Carlos Martínez confirmed that while the painting was not found during the raid on the property—owned by the daughter of a senior Nazi who fled Germany post-World War Two—two weapons were seized. Martínez indicated that investigators are treating the disappearance as a potential cover-up. Reports from Argentinian daily Clarin suggest furnishings had been rearranged, and a large rug replaced the painting’s spot on the wall.

The long-lost artwork, part of Amsterdam art dealer Jacques Goudstikker’s collection forcibly sold by the Nazis, had been missing for over 80 years before its recent reappearance in the advertisement. Its latest disappearance adds another layer of mystery to its tumultuous history, prompting a high-stakes smuggling investigation.
