Ukraine Endures ‘Massive’ Russian Air Assault, US Factory Hit

Ukraine’s foreign minister, Andrii Sybiha, has confirmed that Russia launched a “massive combined air strike” across the country overnight into Thursday, August 21, 2025, deploying 614 air attack munitions, including 574 drones and 40 missiles. This marks Russia’s largest aerial assault since July 12, with civilian and energy infrastructure among the primary targets.
Devastating impacts were reported across 11 locations. Notably, a major American electronics manufacturer, identified as a Flextronics factory, was struck in Mukachevo, a city in Ukraine’s westernmost region, causing serious damage and injuring at least 19 people. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy condemned the strike on the civilian enterprise, stating it was an “American investment” producing household items, and called for stronger international pressure and sanctions against Moscow.
In Lviv, a western Ukrainian city, at least one person was killed and three injured in the barrages. Ukrainian air defenses reported intercepting 546 drones and 31 missiles during the assault. The intense activity prompted NATO aircraft, including Swedish JAS 39 Gripen fighters, to scramble in Polish airspace in response to Russian long-range aviation.
Meanwhile, Russia’s Defense Ministry claimed its forces downed at least 71 Ukrainian drones overnight into Thursday. Russian officials in the Voronezh and Rostov regions also reported drone attacks, with an energy facility damaged and a fire breaking out at an industrial enterprise, respectively.
