The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has issued an urgent public health warning, advising consumers to immediately avoid certain frozen shrimp products sold at Walmart due to potential contamination with radioactive Cesium-137 (Cs-137).

The alert, announced by the FDA, stems from an ongoing investigation into reports of Cs-137 detection in shipping containers and frozen shrimp processed by Indonesian company PT. Bahari Makmur Sejati, also known as BMS Food.

Affected products include raw frozen shrimp, specifically Walmart’s ‘Great Value’ brand, distributed across 13 U.S. states: Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Missouri, Mississippi, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Texas, and West Virginia.

Consumers who have recently purchased these specific raw frozen shrimp products from Walmart are strongly advised to dispose of them immediately and not to consume or serve them. While no products above the current derived intervention levels for Cs-137 (1200 Bq/kg) were detected, the FDA noted that even the levels found in a breaded shrimp sample could pose a health concern when combined with environmental or medical radiation exposure.

Cs-137 is a radioactive form of Cesium, known to increase cancer risk through DNA damage with repeated exposure. The FDA was alerted by U.S. Customs and Border Protection after detecting Cs-137 in shipping containers at major ports including Los Angeles, Houston, Miami, and Savannah, Georgia. All contaminated containers and products were denied entry into the country.

Health officials recommend that individuals concerned about potential exposure contact their healthcare providers.
