In a surprising development, U.S. Air Force Chief of Staff Gen. David Allvin announced Monday he will retire in November, cutting short his four-year term just two years in. Sources familiar with the decision indicate Allvin’s early departure follows his learning of Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth’s intent to remove him from the position.

This move marks the latest in a series of high-level military leadership changes under Defense Secretary Hegseth and President Donald Trump’s second term. Allvin’s retirement comes as a shock to some defense officials, with one telling CNN the announcement was “very unexpected” and there had been no prior indication of his plans to leave.

Gen. Allvin is the fourth senior military official to depart their post since the start of President Trump’s second term, following the firings of Coast Guard Commandant Adm. Linda Fagan in January, Joint Chiefs of Staff Chair Gen. C.Q. Brown in February, Chief of Naval Operations Adm. Lisa Franchetti also in February, and Cyber Command chief Gen. Timothy Haugh in April. In a statement, Allvin expressed gratitude for his service, while Secretary of the Air Force Troy E. Meink praised his leadership and “transformational initiatives.”
