A fatal truck crash in Florida has sparked a renewed political debate over immigration policy, after federal officials confirmed the driver involved was in the U.S. illegally. The U.S. Department of Homeland Security stated that the truck driver, Harjinder Singh, accused of causing the deaths of three people by making an illegal U-turn on Florida’s Turnpike, had entered the country illegally from Mexico in 2018.

The incident has intensified a verbal dispute between federal authorities and California Governor Gavin Newsom’s office. Homeland Security criticized California’s policy of issuing commercial driver’s licenses regardless of immigration status, with a spokesperson calling the practice “asinine.” However, Newsom’s press office countered on social media, asserting that Singh obtained a work permit during the Trump administration. This claim was disputed by Homeland Security, which clarified that a permit was denied in September 2020 under Trump, but granted in June 2021 under President Joe Biden.

Singh faces three state counts of vehicular homicide and immigration violations. Authorities report he made the illegal U-turn in an “official use only” area, resulting in a minivan colliding with his truck’s trailer. Two passengers died at the scene, and the driver succumbed to injuries at a hospital. Federal authorities have requested Singh be transferred to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) custody upon completion of his criminal case.
