Former President Donald Trump is actively pursuing a trilateral meeting involving himself, Russian President Vladimir Putin, and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, announcing his efforts via Truth Social on Monday evening. This development comes as his former National Security Adviser, John Bolton, offered sharp criticism of Trump’s negotiation style following a recent summit in Alaska.

Bolton, speaking on The Daily Beast Podcast, asserted that Putin was “automatically in better shape” to negotiate with Trump, citing a recent private interaction where Trump invited Putin into the presidential limousine. He also recounted past experiences, including a 2018 briefing for a Putin summit where Trump was reportedly distracted by a FIFA soccer match and had not reviewed prepared materials.

Highlighting what he perceives as Trump’s consistent unpreparedness for complex discussions, Bolton suggested that Putin typically emerges from meetings feeling more successful. Despite these critiques, Trump described his Monday meeting with Zelenskyy and European leaders as “very good” and confirmed he had initiated arrangements for the Putin-Zelenskyy direct talks, which would precede his proposed trilateral summit.
