COLUMBUS, Ohio – Veteran Ohio Democrat Sherrod Brown officially launched his campaign Monday to return to the U.S. Senate, setting the stage for a high-stakes challenge against Republican incumbent Jon Husted, who has already secured the endorsement of former President Donald Trump.

Brown, a long-time advocate for working-class families, stated his decision to run was solidified after witnessing the Senate’s passage of a Trump-backed tax and spending bill last month. He described the legislation as perpetuating a “rigged system” that favors the wealthy at the expense of lower-income Americans.

“We just couldn’t stay on the sideline,” Brown told the Associated Press, emphasizing his commitment to being a voice for Ohio workers in Washington. “Nobody in the Senate is speaking out for Ohio workers, nobody. And that’s my job to do.”

Husted, a former Ohio lieutenant governor appointed to the seat in January following JD Vance’s election as Vice President, is viewed as a formidable opponent. His campaign spokesperson, Tyson Shepard, criticized Brown’s tenure, stating he has “imposed Washington’s problems on Ohio.”

The 2026 election will determine the final two years of the six-year term for the seat. Brown, 72, is considered one of the Democratic Party’s strongest candidates as they aim to gain control of the Senate in what is expected to be a challenging midterm cycle, particularly in a state like Ohio, which has increasingly leaned Republican.
