Hurricane Erin Sustains Category 4 Power, Nears Turks and Caicos Amid Flash Flood Warnings

Hurricane Erin, the first major hurricane of the 2025 Atlantic season, continues to pose a significant threat as it maintains its powerful Category 4 status. After rapidly intensifying to a dangerous Category 5 cyclone over the weekend, Erin has slightly weakened but remains a formidable storm, passing safely north of the Caribbean islands.
Despite its northern track, the hurricane’s outer bands have already brought substantial rainfall to the northern Caribbean, with 2-4 inches expected through Sunday and isolated totals up to six inches. The National Hurricane Center warns of potential flash and urban flooding, along with landslides or mudslides in affected areas.
A Tropical Storm Watch is currently in effect for the Turks and Caicos in the southeast Bahamas, as the main core of Hurricane Erin is projected to pass just north and east of the islands over the next 48 hours. Erin’s formation on August 16, following heavy rains from its precursor Invest 97L in the Cabo Verde islands, marks the first hurricane of the 2025 season, which had previously seen four tropical storms.
