American pilot Ethan Guo, arrested over 40 days ago following an emergency landing in Chilean Antarctica, has spoken out after his case was suspended. Despite being cleared of charges and ordered to make a $30,000 donation to a local charity, Guo revealed in an August 13, 2025, interview that Chilean authorities are still preventing him from leaving the military base.

Guo, who was attempting to become the youngest person to fly solo to all seven continents and raise money for cancer research, diverted to Antarctica in late June after experiencing radio failure and engine trouble. He landed on a remote island, believing he had permission, but was subsequently arrested and charged with providing false flight information.

While grateful for the charges being dropped, Guo maintains his innocence and expressed frustration over the prolonged ordeal. He described feeling like a “prisoner” and stated that various reasons given for his continued detention, such as his plane being unfit or lacking fuel, are “objectively false.” His attorney confirmed that despite his exoneration, the Chilean government has not allowed him to fly his airworthy plane off the base.

Guo, who began his fundraising mission last year, is determined to retrieve his aircraft and continue his journey to support childhood cancer research.
