Liu Jianchao, a prominent Chinese diplomat and current head of the Communist Party of China’s International Department, has reportedly been taken into custody by authorities for questioning. The Wall Street Journal broke the news on Sunday, citing sources familiar with the situation.

Widely considered a strong candidate for China’s next foreign minister, Liu was reportedly detained upon his return to Beijing in late July following an an overseas work trip. His busy international schedule, including high-profile meetings such as one with former U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken, had fueled speculation that he was being prepared for the top diplomatic post.

This development marks the highest-profile investigation involving a diplomat since the 2023 removal of former foreign minister Qin Gang, a protégé of President Xi Jinping. China’s State Council Information Office and the Communist Party International Liaison Department have not yet responded to requests for comment regarding Liu’s reported detention.

At 61, Liu has overseen the Communist Party’s engagement with foreign political parties since 2022, travelling to over 20 nations and meeting officials from more than 160 countries. His distinguished career includes roles as ambassador to Indonesia and the Philippines, and a period as a foreign ministry spokesman known for his direct yet humorous communication style.
