NYC Identifies Three More 9/11 Victims Through Ongoing DNA Analysis

New York City officials have announced the identification of three additional victims of the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center. This breakthrough, nearly 24 years after the tragic events, brings the total number of identified victims to 1,653.
The newly confirmed victims are Ryan Fitzgerald of Floral Park, New York; Barbara Keating of Palm Springs, California; and an unnamed woman whose identity is being withheld at her family’s request. The identifications were made possible through persistent family outreach and cutting-edge DNA analysis conducted by the New York City Chief Medical Examiner’s office.
Dr. Jason Graham, the chief medical examiner, emphasized the office’s unwavering commitment. “Nearly 25 years after the disaster at the World Trade Center, our commitment to identify the missing and return them to their loved ones stands as strong as ever,” he stated. These are the first identifications since last year, highlighting the continuous, painstaking effort.
While their identities were recently confirmed via DNA, the names of Keating and Fitzgerald are already etched among the nearly 3,000 names on the 9/11 Memorial in New York City. Approximately 1,100 victims of the attacks, which claimed 2,977 lives across New York City, the Pentagon, and Pennsylvania, still await identification.
Graham added, “Each new identification testifies to the promise of science and sustained outreach to families despite the passage of time. We continue this work as our way of honoring the lost.” This ongoing scientific and humanitarian effort underscores the profound and lasting impact of the 9/11 tragedy.
