Six Fort Stewart soldiers were recently honored with the Meritorious Service Medal for their extraordinary bravery in disarming a fellow service member who opened fire on the Georgia base just two days prior. The incident, which occurred on August 6, 2025, saw unarmed soldiers tackling the gunman, who was actively shooting at their colleagues.

Army Secretary Dan Driscoll praised the soldiers’ actions, stating, “They were unarmed and ran at and tackled an armed person who they knew was actively shooting their buddies, their colleagues, their fellow soldiers.” The suspect, identified as Sgt. Quornelius Radford, is currently in pretrial custody awaiting charges. Officials confirmed Radford used a personal weapon in the shooting, which took place in the 2nd Brigade Combat Team’s area.

The quick thinking and training of soldiers were credited with saving lives. Brig. Gen. John Lubas noted that initial first aid, particularly stopping bleeding before ambulances arrived, was critical for the wounded. Of the five soldiers injured, three have been released from the hospital, while two remain hospitalized but are expected to make a full recovery. The Army Criminal Investigative Division continues its investigation into the shooting.
