Three Feared Dead After Small Plane Crashes Off Monterey Coast

Three individuals were discovered unresponsive Sunday morning following the crash of a small aircraft into the Pacific Ocean off the central California coast. Emergency responders were alerted late Saturday night to reports of a plane going down approximately 300 yards (275 meters) from Point Pinos in Monterey County, according to the U.S. Coast Guard.
Witnesses reported hearing an aircraft engine revving before a splash, and debris from the wreckage later washed ashore. The twin-engine Beech 95-B55 Baron, carrying three people, departed from San Carlos airport at 10:11 p.m. and was last tracked near Monterey at 10:37 p.m. Coast Guard boat and helicopter crews, aided by local law enforcement and fire agencies, initiated a search and rescue operation. One person was located around 3 a.m., with divers finding the remaining two inside the submerged aircraft between 6:30 a.m. and 9:15 a.m. All three were unresponsive, and the coroner’s office will make the official determination of death. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) will conduct a full investigation into the incident.
