Authorities have arrested an 18-year-old suspect in connection with a fatal shooting on the University of New Mexico’s Albuquerque campus that left a 14-year-old boy dead. The incident, which occurred on July 25, reportedly stemmed from a video game session in a student housing complex.

University police responded to an alarm at approximately 1:36 a.m. on July 25, discovering signs of violence. Shortly after, a 19-year-old man sought treatment for a gunshot wound at UNM Hospital, stating he had been shot on campus. During a sweep of the Casas del Rio housing complex, officers located the 14-year-old victim deceased in a dorm room.

New Mexico State Police Chief Troy Weisler stated that investigators believe four individuals were playing video games when the suspect, identified as John Fuentes, allegedly began firing a weapon. Fuentes was apprehended during a traffic stop later on July 25.

The shooting caused significant disruption, leading to a five-hour shelter-in-place order for the campus, where approximately 400 students were staying for new student orientation. University President Garnett S. Stokes expressed deep sorrow over the violence, and New Mexico Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham condemned the incident, reinforcing the state’s ban on firearms on campus. Authorities have indicated they believe it was an isolated event, posing no further threat to the campus community.
