A horrific attack on a courthouse in Iran’s southeastern Sistan-Baluchestan province has resulted in the deaths of at least five civilians and injured 13 others. The assault, which occurred earlier today in Zahedan, the provincial capital, involved gunmen throwing a hand grenade into the building. Among the confirmed fatalities are a mother and her child, according to a senior police official.

Iranian media reports, citing the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), indicate that three of the attackers were also killed during the violent incident. Jaish al-Adl, a Baloch armed group active in the region, has claimed responsibility for the attack via its Telegram channel, urging civilians to evacuate clash areas for their safety.

Authorities stated the assailants attempted to enter the courthouse disguised as visitors. Witnesses quoted by the human rights group HAALVSH reported that judicial staff and and security personnel were among those killed or wounded when the attackers stormed judges’ chambers. Emergency services swiftly responded, evacuating the injured to medical centers.

Sistan-Baluchestan, bordering Pakistan and Afghanistan, is home to Iran’s Sunni Muslim Baloch minority, who cite economic marginalization and political exclusion. The province frequently experiences clashes between Iranian security forces and armed groups, with the government accusing some of these groups of foreign ties and involvement in cross-border smuggling.
