President Donald Trump on Tuesday leveled explosive and unsubstantiated accusations of treason against former President Barack Obama from the Oval Office, claiming Obama attempted to “rig the election” without providing any evidence. These remarks came just days after Trump shared an AI-generated fake video depicting Obama’s arrest on his social media platform.

The accusations were made during Trump’s meeting with Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. in Washington. “They tried to rig the election, and they got caught. And there should be very severe consequences for that,” Trump told reporters. He further elaborated, “This was treason. This was every word you can think of. They tried to steal the election. They tried to obfuscate the election. They did things that nobody’s ever even imagined, even in other countries.”

A spokesperson for former President Obama swiftly refuted Trump’s claims, stating they would “not normally dignify the constant nonsense” but found the allegations “outrageous enough to merit one.” The spokesperson called the “bizarre allegations ridiculous and a weak attempt at distraction.”

Trump’s comments follow a criminal referral submitted by Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard to the Department of Justice concerning the Obama administration. However, Obama’s spokesperson reiterated that “nothing in the document issued last week undercuts the widely accepted conclusion that Russia worked to influence the 2016 presidential election but did not successfully manipulate any votes,” a finding affirmed by the bipartisan Senate Intelligence Committee in 2020.

Critics suggest that Trump’s escalating rhetoric, including the recent reposting of the AI-generated video, is an attempt to divert public attention from ongoing scrutiny regarding the Jeffrey Epstein files and calls for greater transparency from his administration on the matter. When questioned about Deputy Attorney Todd Blanche’s meeting with Ghislaine Maxwell, Trump pivoted to attacking Obama, labeling him the “leader of the gang.”
