The World Health Organization (WHO) has vehemently condemned recent Israeli attacks on its facilities in central Gaza, warning that the ongoing offensive is severely compromising vital humanitarian efforts. The UN agency reported that its staff residence in Deir al-Balah was repeatedly attacked, leading to the detention and mistreatment of personnel, with one staff member reportedly still held by Israeli forces. Furthermore, the WHO’s main warehouse in the city was allegedly destroyed in an attack, crippling aid distribution.

While the Israeli military stated it detained individuals suspected of terrorism in the area, most of whom were later released, the WHO asserts its operational presence in Gaza is now critically compromised. This threatens to collapse an already fragile health system serving over two million people.

The offensive in Deir al-Balah has triggered mass displacement, forcing tens of thousands to flee. The humanitarian crisis is rapidly escalating, with Gaza’s Hamas-run health ministry reporting 33 deaths, including 12 children, from malnutrition across the territory in just 48 hours. UN officials have expressed grave concerns over widespread hunger and the breakdown of essential services, with residents describing Gaza as ‘a place of death, hunger, and exhaustion.’ The UN human rights chief warned of ‘unlawful killings and other serious violations of international humanitarian law,’ underscoring the dire and worsening catastrophe.
