A Bangladesh Air Force training jet crashed into a private school campus in Dhaka on Monday, July 21, 2025, resulting in at least 20 fatalities and over 160 injuries. The F-7 BGI jet, a variant of a Chinese fighter, impacted the Milestone School and College in the Uttara neighborhood shortly after takeoff, marking the deadliest airplane crash in the Bangladeshi capital in recent memory.

The tragic incident, which occurred around 1:06 p.m. local time, claimed the life of the pilot, who was among the deceased. Many of the more than 160 injured were students attending afternoon classes on campus. Officials reported that the pilot attempted to steer clear of densely populated areas, but the aircraft struck a two-story building. A preliminary assessment points to a “technical malfunction” as the cause, with a high-level Air Force committee now tasked with a full investigation.

In the wake of the disaster, Bangladesh’s interim leader Muhammad Yunus expressed deep sorrow and vowed a comprehensive inquiry. The government has declared Tuesday, July 22, 2025, a national day of mourning, with flags flying at half-staff across the country. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi also extended his condolences, affirming India’s solidarity and readiness to provide assistance to Bangladesh.
