Man Dies in MRI Accident: Investigation Underway into Tragic Long Island Incident

A 61-year-old Long Island man, Keith McAllister, has tragically died after being pulled into a powerful magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) machine at a medical facility in Westbury, New York. Authorities have confirmed the incident, which occurred recently at Nassau Open MRI.
The fatal accident happened when McAllister entered the MRI room to assist his wife, Adrienne Jones-McAllister, who was undergoing a knee scan. According to Adrienne, her husband, who regularly wore a 20-pound metal chain for weight training, was immediately pulled into the machine by its immense magnetic field. “His body went limp,” she recounted to News 12 Long Island, adding that the image of him going limp in her arms is still vivid.
Despite efforts by Adrienne and the attending MRI technician to free him, McAllister remained pinned. He was rushed to the hospital in critical condition and succumbed to his injuries the following day.
The Nassau County Police Department’s homicide squad has launched an investigation into the incident. As of now, no charges have been filed. Adrienne McAllister stated that her husband had visited the facility previously and the technician was aware of the chain, suggesting potential lapses in safety protocols.
Medical professionals are reiterating the critical importance of strict MRI safety guidelines in the wake of this tragedy. Experts, including Dr. Payal Sud of North Shore University Hospital and Charles Winterfeldt, director of imaging services, emphasize that all metal objects must be removed before entering an MRI room to prevent catastrophic incidents like this, as the machine’s magnetic force can turn metal into dangerous projectiles.
