Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba’s Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) and its coalition partner, Komeito, are projected to have lost their majority in the Upper House, according to media reports released Sunday. This significant defeat could trigger Prime Minister Ishiba’s resignation or lead to a period of political deadlock within parliament.

The election saw a notable surge in support for populist opposition parties, particularly the Democratic Party for the People and Sanseito, which are expected to gain a substantial number of seats. This outcome, occurring just nine months after Ishiba took office, is widely viewed as a strong rebuke of the prime minister and the LDP. It marks the second national election under Ishiba’s leadership where the party has suffered a major setback, following the loss of its majority in the Lower House poll last October.
