Maine Teen Identified, Charged in Union Paddleboarder Murder

UNION, Maine – Authorities have identified and charged a 17-year-old male in connection with the murder of a paddleboarder whose body was discovered earlier this month in Crawford Pond. Deven Young, 17, faces murder charges for the death of 48-year-old Sunshine “Sunny” Stewart of Tenants Harbor.
Young was arrested on Wednesday in Union and is currently being held at the Long Creek Youth Development Center in South Portland. Stewart’s body was found under “unusual circumstances” on an island in Crawford Pond around 1 a.m. on July 3, after she failed to return from a solo paddleboard excursion the previous day. Her death has been ruled a homicide, with the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner confirming strangulation and blunt force trauma as the cause.
The motive for Stewart’s murder remains unclear, and it has not been disclosed whether the suspect and victim knew each other. The incident had put the small Union community on edge, with residents expressing relief following the recent arrest. Local residents like Meredith Smith and Debbie Wadsworth shared their concerns about the safety of the community prior to the arrest, and their satisfaction that a suspect has been apprehended.
Maine State Police continue their investigation and are not releasing further details at this time. Anyone with information related to the case is urged to contact the Maine State Police at (207) 624-7076 or by texting MESPTIP to 847411.
