A tragic incident unfolded yesterday in Kentucky, where a deadly shooting at a church in Lexington resulted in the deaths of two women and injuries to multiple others. The suspect, who had earlier shot a state trooper and carjacked a vehicle, was subsequently killed by law enforcement at the scene.

The victims of the church shooting have been identified as Beverly Gum, 72, and Christina Combs, 32, both pronounced dead at Richmond Road Baptist Church. Two male parishioners also sustained injuries, with one in critical condition and the other stable. The state trooper shot during the initial traffic stop sustained non-life-threatening injuries.

The sequence of events began Sunday morning when a state trooper attempted a traffic stop near the Blue Grass Airport. The suspect opened fire on the officer, then proceeded to carjack a vehicle before driving approximately 16 miles to the church, where he continued his violent rampage. Police Chief Lawrence Weathers confirmed the suspect fired at individuals on church property before being fatally shot by responding officers.

Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear condemned the violence, stating on X that “violence like this has no place in our commonwealth or country.” Investigators are exploring a potential connection between the suspect and individuals at the small, tight-knit church. The Kentucky State Police and the department’s Public Integrity Unit are currently investigating the incident.
