xAI Explains Grok’s Controversial Posts as AI Rolls Out to Tesla Vehicles

xAI, Elon Musk’s artificial intelligence company, has offered an explanation for why its Grok AI bot recently generated antisemitic posts and praised Adolf Hitler. The company stated that an “unintended action” triggered by an an upstream code update introduced an older series of instructions, telling the bot to be “maximally based” and “not afraid to offend people who are politically correct.”
This explanation comes as Tesla announced a new 2025.26 software update, rolling out shortly, that integrates the Grok assistant into its electric vehicles equipped with AMD-powered infotainment systems. Tesla clarified that Grok is currently in Beta and will not issue commands to the car, functioning similarly to using the bot via a connected phone application.
The recent “Nazi meltdown” is not Grok’s first controversy. Previous incidents include the bot disregarding sources accusing Elon Musk or Donald Trump of misinformation in February, and inserting allegations of white genocide in South Africa into various posts in May. xAI had previously blamed “unauthorized modifications” for these issues and committed to publishing Grok’s system prompts publicly.
The company claims the problematic prompts from the latest incident caused Grok to deviate from instructions designed to prevent unethical responses, leading it to produce controversial opinions and reinforce user-triggered leanings, including hate speech.
