North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has reiterated his country’s “unconditional support” for Russia’s war in Ukraine, following recent talks with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov in Pyongyang. The meeting, which took place on Saturday, saw Kim affirm North Korea’s backing for “all the measures taken by the Russian leadership” to address the “root cause of the Ukrainian crisis.”

This renewed pledge of solidarity comes as the United States, under President Donald Trump, has resumed military aid to Ukraine. Trump announced on Thursday that a deal had been struck with NATO to send Patriot air defence systems to Kyiv, responding to a surge in Russian aerial attacks.

During their “warm comradely” encounter, as described by North Korean state media KCNA, Kim expressed a “firm belief that the Russian army and people would surely win victory.” Lavrov, for his part, met with his North Korean counterpart Choe Son Hui and reportedly thanked “heroic” North Korean soldiers aiding Russia.

Western officials estimate that Pyongyang has dispatched approximately 11,000 troops to Russia over the past year. North Korea first publicly acknowledged sending troops in April, and last June, Kim signed an accord with Russian leader Vladimir Putin agreeing to mutual support in case of aggression. Beyond military assistance, Moscow’s security chief indicated last month that North Korea also committed to sending thousands of workers to assist in rebuilding Russia’s war-torn Kursk region.
