Air India Crash: Preliminary Report Fails to Satisfy Grieving Families, Raises More Questions

Grieving families of victims from last month’s devastating Air India Flight 171 crash are expressing profound disappointment following the release of the preliminary investigative report. Many had hoped for clear answers regarding the tragedy that claimed 241 lives on board and 19 on the ground, but the initial findings have left them with more questions than resolutions.

The London-bound flight crashed into a suburban Ahmedabad neighborhood shortly after takeoff on June 12. The preliminary report, released early Saturday, confirmed that fuel to the aircraft’s engines was cut off mere seconds after liftoff. Crucially, the report did not clarify how or why this occurred. Recovered cockpit voice recordings captured a pilot asking, “why did you cut off?” to which the co-pilot responded, “I did not do so,” highlighting a baffling exchange that offers little comfort to those seeking closure.

Imtiyaz Ali, who lost his brother, sister-in-law, and their two young children, described the report as reading “like a product description” and felt it lacked substantive details on the crash’s cause. “Other than the pilots’ final conversation, there’s nothing in it that really points to what caused the crash,” Ali stated, emphasizing the families’ desperate need for transparency and truth.

Similarly, Shweta Parihar, whose husband Abhinav perished in the crash, voiced the immense emotional toll. While acknowledging no investigation can bring back their loved ones, she, like others, seeks a full account of the events. Badasab Syed, who lost four family members, echoed the sentiment of confusion, asking, “Was this avoidable?” in light of the report’s ambiguity regarding the fuel control switch.

With the preliminary findings falling short of expectations, families now pin their hopes on the final report, which is anticipated in 12 months, to provide the definitive answers they so desperately seek.
