In a significant victory against international organized crime, Colombian authorities, in a coordinated operation with Italian, British, and Europol agencies, announced the arrest of Giuseppe Palermo, an alleged high-ranking leader of Italy’s powerful ‘Ndrangheta mafia. Palermo, also known as “Peppe,” was apprehended on Friday, July 11, in Bogota, Colombia.

Palermo was the subject of an Interpol red notice and is accused of orchestrating vast cocaine shipments and managing illicit trafficking routes stretching from South America to European markets. Colombian police chief Carlos Fernando Triana described Palermo as part of “one of the most tightly knit cells” within the ‘Ndrangheta, which is notorious for its global reach and control over European cocaine supply.

Authorities assert that Palermo was instrumental in purchasing large cocaine shipments from Colombia, Peru, and Ecuador, and then overseeing their complex maritime and land transport to Europe. This arrest comes as illegal cocaine production globally, particularly in Colombia, has seen a substantial increase, underscoring the critical nature of operations targeting such high-level traffickers.
