Samsung Unveils Record-Thin Galaxy Z Fold 7, Explains S Pen Omission for Sleeker Design

Samsung has officially launched its highly anticipated Galaxy Z Fold 7, alongside the Galaxy Z Flip 7 and Galaxy Z Flip 7 FE, at its recent Galaxy Unpacked showcase. The Z Fold 7 marks a significant leap forward for the company’s foldable lineup, achieving unprecedented thinness and a remarkably minimized screen crease.
Measuring just 4.2mm unfolded and 8.9mm folded, the Galaxy Z Fold 7 is now Samsung’s slimmest and lightest foldable to date, rivaling the thickness of traditional flagship smartphones like the Galaxy S25 Ultra. This engineering feat involved a re-imagined hinge design and a unique blend of display layers, including a thin titanium sheet and carbon fiber, to create a ‘teardrop’ fold that significantly reduces the visible crease.
A notable change for enthusiasts is the absence of S Pen support on the Z Fold 7. Blake Geiser, SVP of Smartphone Product Management at Samsung North America, explained this decision was driven by two factors: hardware and user feedback. Removing the digitizer layer allowed Samsung to reinforce other areas of the screen for enhanced durability and to achieve the desired sleek, thin profile. Geiser emphasized that users expressed a strong desire for a thinner device with an improved aspect ratio and extended battery life, leading to the strategic compromise.
Despite the S Pen omission, the Galaxy Z Fold 7 is poised to be Samsung’s most refined foldable yet, balancing cutting-edge design with user-centric improvements in form factor and durability.
