Trump-Xi Summit Looms as US-China Diplomacy Gains Momentum
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio confirmed Friday a ‘high probability’ of a meeting between US President Donald Trump and Chinese leader Xi Jinping this year. Speaking from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, Rubio emphasized a strong mutual desire for the summit, though no date has been set.
The announcement follows Rubio’s ‘very constructive’ and ‘positive’ hour-long meeting with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi on Friday – their first in-person encounter. Both diplomats were in Kuala Lumpur for regional ASEAN meetings, navigating complex trade frictions and geopolitical competition in Asia.
Despite ongoing trade tensions, which saw a tit-for-tat tariff spat earlier this year, a 90-day pause negotiated in May is set to expire in August. A trade framework was agreed upon last month in London, with further discussions expected soon between US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and Chinese counterparts.
Rubio underscored Washington’s commitment to a ‘free, open and secure Indo-Pacific region’ and defended US tariff policies as an effort to ‘reset global trade’ for fairness. The Chinese foreign ministry echoed the positive tone of the meeting, calling it ‘pragmatic and constructive’ and agreeing to strengthen diplomatic channels at all levels.
