The United States has finalized the controversial deportation of eight men to South Sudan, a nation currently under a State Department travel advisory due to “crime, kidnapping, and armed conflict.” The men, who had been held under guard for weeks at a U.S. military base in Djibouti, arrived in the war-torn country on Friday, July 4th, following a series of intense legal battles that reached the Supreme Court.

Homeland Security spokeswoman Tricia McLaughlin announced their arrival on Saturday, July 5th, stating, “This was a win for the rule of law, safety and security of the American people.” Administration officials asserted the men, hailing from Cuba, Laos, Mexico, Myanmar, Vietnam, and South Sudan, had been convicted of violent crimes in the U.S.

The Supreme Court on Thursday, July 3rd, ultimately cleared the path for the transfer, overturning a lower court’s order that had previously halted the deportations. The flight, initially bound for South Sudan in May, was rerouted to Djibouti after a federal judge found the administration had violated an order by not allowing the men a chance to challenge their removal. A flurry of court hearings, including one on Independence Day, attempted to block the transfer, but ultimately, judges concluded their hands were tied by the Supreme Court’s conservative majority ruling in June, which allowed for rapid deportations to third countries.

Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials confirmed the men had final orders of removal, aligning with authorities’ agreements with other countries to house immigrants if immediate repatriation to their homelands is not feasible.
