Seven individuals remain unaccounted for days after a catastrophic series of fireworks explosions obliterated a facility in Esparto, Yolo County, on Tuesday night. The site, identified as belonging to Devastating Pyrotechnics, continues to pose significant hazards, impeding full access for search and recovery efforts.

Authorities revealed critical new details regarding the property, located on County Road 23 and County Road 86A. Investigations have confirmed the site was not zoned for fireworks storage and lacked the necessary county permits for such operations, being designated instead for agricultural equipment storage. Adding to the controversy, the property owner, a lieutenant with the Yolo County Sheriff’s Office, had family members present during the blast who survived.

Despite a press conference held by multiple Yolo County agencies on Thursday, officials provided no new updates and refused to answer questions from the media, citing ongoing hazardous conditions. This lack of transparency has drawn criticism, especially as families of the missing, including that of 18-year-old Jesus Maneces Ramos and 41-year-old Carlos Javier Rodriguez, desperately seek answers.

Cal Fire has declared the explosion site a crime scene, with ATF vehicles and explosive ordinance disposal experts now on location. The hazardous nature, stemming from unignited fireworks and chemicals, has prevented crews from fully entering the area, relying instead on targeted fire suppression and drone assessments.

The incident, which also injured two people and caused widespread power outages and evacuations, has had ripple effects. Several July 4th fireworks displays, including those for Stockton 99 Speedway and the cities of Lodi and Yuba-Sutter, were canceled or rescheduled due to their fireworks being stored at the destroyed Esparto facility. The investigation into the cause and full scope of this devastating event is expected to be lengthy, potentially taking up to a year for a final report.
