A 21-year-old congressional intern for Kansas Rep. Ron Estes has tragically died after being shot earlier this week in Northwest D.C. Eric Tarpinian-Jachym, of Granby, Massachusetts, succumbed to his injuries on Tuesday, following a shooting incident on Monday near the Mt. Vernon Square Metro Station.

Police identified Tarpinian-Jachym, a rising senior at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst, who had been in D.C. for his internship with Rep. Estes’ office since June. Authorities do not believe he was the intended target of the Monday night shooting, which occurred near the intersection of 7th and M streets.

Preliminary findings from police indicate that multiple suspects exited a vehicle and began firing at “a group.” Officers found Tarpinian-Jachym unconscious at the scene. Congressman Ron Estes released a statement, remembering Tarpinian-Jachym for his “kind heart” and cheerful smile, and expressed gratitude for his service.

Two other individuals, a woman and a 16-year-old boy, were also found at the scene with gunshot wounds and were transported to the hospital.
