Honor has today officially launched its new flagship foldable smartphone, the Honor Magic V5, directly positioning itself as a formidable challenger to market leader Samsung in the rapidly evolving foldable phone segment. Unveiled on Wednesday, July 2, the Magic V5 boasts impressive features designed to capture consumer attention, including an ultra-slim profile and a significantly enhanced battery capacity.

The Magic V5 measures a remarkable 8.8mm to 9mm when folded, making it notably thinner than its predecessor and a strong contender in the race for the slimmest foldable. It also features a lightweight design, ranging from 217 to 222 grams. A standout feature for the Chinese market is a special 1-terabyte storage variant equipped with a battery exceeding 6000 mAh, one of the largest capacities seen in foldable devices. Honor is also touting integrated artificial intelligence capabilities as a key differentiator.

While initially available in China, Honor is expected to roll out the Magic V5 to international markets later this year. This launch comes just a week before Samsung’s anticipated foldable event on July 9, intensifying the competition. Analysts like Francisco Jeronimo of IDC commend the Magic V5 as a ‘dream foldable smartphone,’ praising its battery and overall design. However, industry experts also note that Honor faces challenges in global brand equity and distribution compared to Samsung, which holds a significant lead with 34% of the foldable market share as of 2024.
