J.M. Smucker Co. has announced an accelerated timeline to eliminate all artificial colors from its extensive range of products by the end of 2027. This initiative includes removing synthetic dyes from foods supplied to K-12 schools as early as the 2026-2027 school year, ahead of the broader consumer market rollout.

The Ohio-based food giant confirmed that a significant portion of its portfolio, including popular Uncrustables sandwiches, already meets this new standard. However, certain items like sugar-free jams and select ice cream toppings still contain artificial dyes. Products from the recently acquired Hostess Brands in 2023, such as Twinkies (containing Red 40 and Yellow 5) and Snoballs (with Red 40 Lake), are also slated for reformulation.

Smucker’s move aligns with a growing trend among major food corporations to phase out artificial ingredients, driven by increasing consumer demand for cleaner labels and heightened regulatory scrutiny. The company joins Nestle, Conagra Brands, Kraft Heinz, and General Mills, all of whom have made similar pledges in recent weeks, reflecting a significant shift in the food industry towards more natural formulations.
