New York City is buzzing after a political earthquake reverberated through its Democratic mayoral primary on Tuesday night. In a stunning upset that defied polls and expectations, Zohran Mamdani, a 33-year-old socialist Assembly member from Queens, declared victory over former Governor Andrew Cuomo, who conceded the race.

With over 95% of ballots tallied, returns from the city Board of Elections showed Mamdani leading Cuomo by a significant margin of roughly 44%-36%. This commanding lead prompted Cuomo, once a political titan, to acknowledge his defeat, paving the way for Mamdani to potentially become the youngest man in modern New York history to run City Hall.

Mamdani, who was polling at a mere 1% just months ago, celebrated his triumph at a jubilant election night party in Long Island City. Addressing hundreds of cheering supporters, he declared, “We have won because New Yorkers have stood up for a city they can afford, a city where they can do more than just struggle.” His campaign centered on bold promises to increase taxes on millionaires and corporations to fund rent freezes for stabilized tenants, expand subsidized child care, and make public buses free – a vision he insists will guarantee “a life of dignity” for every New Yorker.

Despite the Board of Elections only releasing first-choice votes and planning to tabulate ranked choices next week, Cuomo saw enough in the initial results to concede. Flanked by his tearful daughters at his Manhattan watch party, the former governor, who resigned in 2021 amid sexual and professional misconduct allegations, stated, “He deserved it, he won.” While Cuomo had previously indicated he would run on an independent line in November regardless of the primary outcome, his concession speech offered a more ambiguous stance, promising “some decisions” after reviewing the full results.

Mamdani’s victory is attributed to an acute focus on affordability, coupled with savvy social media strategies and a massive volunteer base. He successfully countered Cuomo’s attacks on his age, experience, and vocal support for Palestinians during the Israel-Hamas war, instead highlighting Cuomo’s deep-pocketed donor base. The primary race also saw record turnout, with over 930,000 New Yorkers casting ballots despite a scorching heat wave.

The general election in November is shaping up to be unusually competitive. While the Democratic primary often determines the next mayor in the heavily blue city, Mayor Adams is running as an independent, alongside lawyer Jim Walden and Republican Curtis Sliwa. Mamdani, as the presumptive Democratic nominee, will now face the challenge of uniting the party and convincing a broader electorate that his progressive vision can indeed become reality, heralding what many progressive Democrats are calling “the dawn of a new era” for the city’s political landscape.
